'Right now, it is the soul of this nation'

Good morning, Minnesota.

Happy Friday. Here’s to hoping it’s the start of a relaxing weekend.

A few raindrops today. Showers are likely in the morning, and there’s a chance of showers in the afternoon, too. Highs will be in the mid 50s. Tomorrow will start cloudy and then clear up, with highs in the lower 50s. Sounds like a nice Saturday. Check out the latest forecast from Updraft.

What’s next for George Floyd Square

As Tuesday’s verdict boomed through a Bluetooth speaker, hundreds of people at 38th Street and Chicago Avenue cheered and embraced one another. Though the decision was announced in a courtroom more than three miles away, the intersection has symbolized a movement that many credit for putting Derek Chauvin on trial in the first place.

But its future remains a source of tension between city leaders and the activists who have held the intersection in protest for nearly a year.

Photos: Community and family gather to mourn Daunte Wright

Hundreds of people wearing COVID-19 masks packed into Shiloh Temple International Ministries to remember Wright, a 20-year-old father of one who was shot by a white police officer on April 11 in Brooklyn Center, Minn.

“My son had a smile that was worth a million dollars,” Katie Wright, Daunte’s mother, told mourners through tears Thursday during the church service. “He was a brother, a jokester, and he was loved by so many. He's going to be so missed.”

MN schools to stay open despite growing COVID-19 spread among students

Minnesota officials want more testing of middle and high school students, saying they’re increasingly concerned about the spread of COVID-19 in younger people, particularly those playing youth sports.

Here are Minnesota’s latest  COVID-19 statistics:

  • 7,026 deaths (10 new)

  • 562,420 positive cases; 96 percent off isolation

  • 53 percent of adults with at least one dose; 37 percent completely vaccinated

  • About 86 percent of Minnesotans 65 and older with at least one vaccine dose
