The Sunday Round-Up

Greetings from Los Angeles! I hope you had a very merry Christmas. If you get my daily travel tip, then you already know that, according to Reuters, “the U.S. government will require all airline passengers arriving from the United Kingdom to test negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours of departure starting Monday amid concerns about a new coronavirus variant that may be more transmissible.”

Here’s a copy of the CDC’s statement per David Shepardson and here's an idea of what the airlines (United) are sending out to customers. It also appears New York City will be stepping up their quarantine enforcement. U.K. travelers will get visits from sheriff's deputies.

One of the daily emails I subscribe to is the UK's foreign travel advice since it alerts you of everything going on in the world or the countries you're interested in. I wrote about it in 2015 and here's what you need to know.

The good news is that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, thanks to the FDA approval of a second vaccine in a week. It can’t come soon enough but we just need to sit tight until they’re distributed. In the meantime, now is the perfect opportunity to plan your travels for 2021, including heeding my number one travel tip to save you money and headaches. I'm hoping my family and I can go on the flights I purchased with miles a few months ago for April but that might be a tad premature. Only time will tell but I'm staying optimistic and hopeful.

JUST IN: I am so saddened by this news. I just read on ESPN that Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro, famous for signature knuckleball, has died at 81. I was so fortunate to spend a long weekend with Phil and Ken Burns (thanks to Tauck Tours) at the Baseball Hall of Fame and then we had breakfast together in the Albany Airport while waiting for our flights. He told me so many stories and kept giving me riddles to solve that they used to test each other during rain delays. He was just a seriously cool guy! Here’s my story from the long weekend. RIP, Phil. You will be missed.
