BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer Michael Thomas was well-known in the Kings Estates neighborhood as a man who would help elderly residents with chores, cut neighbors' hair and supply comedic relief. A recent shooting outside a nearby convenience store took the 51-year-old's life. Now, one resident thinks the neighborhood will never be the same.
The Louisiana Legislature is expected to pick up the tab for intensive tutoring after federal COVID money expires later this year. However, that $30 million will support only a fraction of students who are behind in school. The measure limits eligibility to students in grades K-5.
Glasgow Middle School teacher Nathalie Roy will be taking an educational cruise this summer that will allow her to see ancient sites in the British Isles. Her students have a request. “I’ve already been told I have to bring back a puffin,” she said. The trip is thanks to a teaching fellowship awarded by National Geographic. |
