Where NOLA Eats

BY ANNETTE SISCO | STAFF WRITER

Happy Thursday, New Orleans food fans! This week, we head out to St. Charles Parish, where time-warp hamburger and po-boy shop St. Rose Tavern is reopening after Hurricane Ida. If you're looking for bakeries that ship king cake, we got you!  Brennan restaurant Tableau unveils a new culinary approach, and Frenchmen Street standby Adolfo's is closed ... for now. Plus, recipes that streamline your cooking. Let's dig in...

1. Hamburger heaven?

"We came for lunch but ended up staying most of the day," Ian McNulty begins, in his dispatch from the St. Rose Tavern on River Road in Destrehan, on its first day back since Hurricane Ida. "One po-boy led to another, and the stories seemed always to weave through the past..." By the end of the visit, he's heard the family owners' tale of fighting their way back, and eaten one of the best hamburgers he's ever had. Read Ian's story here.

2. Please, let them eat cake.

Family out of town? The least we can do is send them a king cake. Carlie Kollath Wells put together this list of bakeries that ship the Carnival pastry far and wide. Add your own if it's missing.

3. Wait! There's more.

Chef Gustar Martin has revamped the menu at the Brennan restaurant Tableau. French Quarter dim sum favorite Dian Xin is opening a second restaurant. Adolfo's is closed "indefinitely," but not forever; find out why.  And in case you missed it: eight restaurants to try in January.

4. Small wonder?

The king cake craze isn't confined to big commercial kitchens; New Orleans small and home bakers are making their own special king cakes, savory and sweet. Check them out on our Where NOLA Eats Facebook page here.

5. Fast company!

Streamline busy weeknights with smart make-ahead cooking tips from Judy Walker that will save you time and money. Then try these delicious recipes for Italian Skillet Chicken and Chicken Pot Pie Soup.

That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans the food news never stops. For more, visit us at NOLA.com. Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend!
