Exclusive: Jeep's Super Bowl Ad Is Back as DWI Charges Against Bruce Springsteen Are Dropped

Shortly after the Big Game, Jeep paused its Super Bowl ad, “The Middle” featuring Bruce Springsteen, after the star’s recent DWI arrest surfaced. But federal prosecutors in New Jersey dropped the charges, and the ad has resumed. Get the details here.

That’s not the most impactful quandary Jeep is facing right now, though: It’s also weighing an official call from the Cherokee Nation to rebrand the SUV models called Cherokee for the past 40 years. The Cherokee Nation says the branding does not honor the culture. We take a look at the road ahead for Jeep as it weighs what its next steps should be.

Chance the Rapper on Authentic Brand Deals and Optimizing Virtual Concerts

Three Grammy awards into his career, Chance the Rapper comes off as refreshingly down-to-earth and introspective, and it’s that energy he brought to Challenger Brands yesterday to talk about his personal brand, partnerships with other brands and incorporating social justice into his projects. "It's our duty as artists, when you're working with somebody, and you have an integral fight—mental health, homelessness, poverty, inequities in politics—to bring that to everything that you work on," he said. Learn how it’s done.

Also at Challenger Brands:

  • In 2020, Peloton’s focus on forging a virtual community and culture around its products and services significantly accelerated. Global marketing head Dara Treseder joined us to offer lessons learned and advice for other challengers.
  • iRobot, the company behind the Roomba, still considers itself a challenger brand, said CMO Kiran Smith, describing how the company fits into the larger market and continues to focus on connecting with customers.
  • Our first ever year of international programming continued with brands from India and South Asia, including India's popular JioSaavn audio streaming service. The brand says there’s still room for massive improvement in a world of “earbud moments.”

Exclusive | Here's What Dentsu's Reorganization Actually Looks Like

Every holding company has a different idea for what a successful structure looks like. At Publicis, the Power of One defines the organization—giving clients access to the holding company's deep resources. At WPP, the merging of agencies, new and old, over the past two years has given it a fresh look. Dentsu is the latest holding group to offer clients something new as it took a page out of both WPP's and Publicis' books. Dentsu consolidated into six global brands, each with their own disciplines and capabilities—capabilities that clients will have full access to across its network.

In this exclusive look inside of Dentsu, reporter Erik Oster reveals the inner-workings of the holding company and how it is pitching itself to perspective clients.
