Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Seth Rogen

During a recent interview with Britain's Sunday Times, Seth Rogen walked back his previous support of longtime collaborator James Franco, revealing that he has no plans to work again with his former acting and producing partner.

The allegations against Franco include claims that he pressured aspiring actresses enrolled in his acting classes to engage in explicit sex scenes, a 17-year-old girl who Franco allegedly messaged on Instagram seeking to meet up, and other allegations of sexual harassment.

Rogen apologized for a "terrible joke" about the allegations he made on Saturday Night Live in 2014, and  regarding a 2018 interview where he said he would keep working with Franco, said "the truth is that I have not and I do not plan to right now.”

Many now-disgraced Hollywood figures like Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby were able to continue their predatory behavior for years, sometimes decades, because of their influence in the industry. Weinstein in particular is reported to have harmed the careers of women who rejected him.

Rogen has known Franco for years, and is in a better position than most to consider the allegations against Franco and whether they are credible. Publicly refusing to work with Franco sends a clear and important message that predatory behavior can have professional consequences.

MEDIA LOSER:
Rob Finnerty

Rob Finnerty, the host of Newsmax's Wake Up America, had a completely avoidable embarrassing moment Monday. Finnerty had invited on his show former Obama speechwriter David Litt to discuss Elon Musk's hosting gig on Saturday Night Live this past weekend.

The interview went off the rails almost immediately, as Litt said the controversy over Musk's appearance on SNL was a situation where "people made stuff up, and then said it on television like it’s true," and compared that to Dominion Voting Systems' lawsuit against Newsmax over false claims about fraud in the 2020 election.

"Newsmax was lying to its own viewers," said Litt, "and Newsmax had to settle that lawsuit. So actually, I just need to check-in: Are you still telling that lie or are you telling new lies?”

Finnerty was taken aback, refused to answer Litt's question, and attempted to steer the topic back to SNL. Finnerty kept dodging, Litt kept asking -- until Newsmax abruptly dropped his feed.

Finnerty could have ended this whole kerfuffle by just answering the question with Newsmax's own statement on their website acknowledging that the election fraud claims were false. Just like many congressional Republicans wary of their Trump-loyal voter base, Finnerty is willing to condone a lie rather than risk angering Trump supporters in his audience.

The A-Block

Silence is golden

"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything" -- good advice given by moms for ages (Happy belated Mother's Day, by the way). Advice that it seems that many prominent figures should have heeded...

First up, director Joss Whedon, who is facing multiple allegations of sexist and unprofessional behavior on sets of his projects like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Justice League. Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot has now publicly confirmed reports that Whedon had allegedly threatened her career

Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro went on Steve Bannon's podcast to accuse Dr. Anthony Fauci of wanting to "weaponize" the coronavirus and being responsible for the deaths of "millions" of Americans.

Horse trainer Bob Baffert, facing accusations of drugging his Kentucky Derby-winning horse Medina Spirit, tried to blame "cancel culture" for his problems. We'd understand blaming Dr. Seuss if the horse had tested positive for green eggs and ham, but this was a bit of a stretch. And Medina Spirit is Baffert's 29th horse to fail a drug test during his career.

New York Times columnist Elizabeth Bruenig wrote a heartwarming article about how becoming a mother at age 25 was a positive choice for her family, and a bunch of cranky people on Twitter melted down. Mediaite's Caleb Howe has the roundup of bonkers tweets here.

It's a good question

Fox News’ Tucker Carlson has been getting a lot of heat over his comments about the Covid-19 vaccine, and CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner is “sick of his nonsense.”

On Sunday, Reiner told CNN Newsroom host Jim Acosta that Carlson was a “saboteur” for his rhetoric on the vaccines, and in a clip that quickly went viral, said it was time for Carlson to publicly acknowledge whether or not he himself had been vaccinated.

Mediaite's Colby Hall asked the same question on Friday

Watch Reiner's discussion with Acosta here.
