I enjoyed some fantastic racing at Rolex 24 at Daytona over the weekend, which was capped by race winner Helio Castroneves stopping right in front of my vantage spot to climb the fence with his Meyer Shank Racing Acura crew and teammates. Afterwards, Helio was his usually bubbly self in the press conference – “Mike, let’s go to Le Mans! Let’s go!” – he implored of team boss Mike Shank, who is no stranger to Le Mans, having last raced there in 2016 As a four-time Indy 500 winner, and now double Rolex 24 victor, I think it’s a must for Helio to go for Le Mans glory as success there would crown an epic career. Of course, he never got his shot at racing in F1, but told me his one test in 2002 went so well that Toyota decided to give him an end-of-day run on low fuel… And the car broke down as he left the pits! Speaking of F1, that is clearly on Rolex 24 LMP2 class winner Pato O’Ward’s radar after his McLaren test in Abu Dhabi, and team boss Zak Brown has laid out a straightforward path for him to get there: “Go win in IndyCar.” How about that for motivation?
