Dear foraus community,
 
Understanding migrant communities is the first step towards evidence-based policy-making. But whom to engage and how? Our newest publication Understanding the Romanian Diaspora: The missing link builds on the assumption that diasporas contribute to home and host societies in ways that still remain untapped. The study shows not only how the number of Romanian migrants to Switzerland has increased at a steady rate over the past ten years, but also how diaspora organisations perform different functions, facilitating the integration of newcomers, or engaging in transnational cooperation centred on campaigning, advocacy and active monitoring amongst others. Moreover, after Poland, Romania is the second largest beneficiary of Swiss cohesion funding, in excess of 1,3 billion CHF, therefore paving the way towards broader consultations and engaging the diaspora in the disbursement of cohesion funding would actually improve the accountability of public spending. The roundtable event launching this report gathered experts from international organisations as well as policy-makers from Swiss and Romanian institutions.

Die foraus Community 

Für die diesjährige Herbstretraite hat es unsere aktiven Freiwilligen nach Delémont verschlagen. Das Wochenende war geprägt von intensiven aussenpolitischen Diskussionen, lustigen Momenten und interessierten Menschen. Der erste Workshop am Samstag wurde von Amani Bathily und Maureen Crouche gegeben und behandelte die Themen Inklusivität & Diversität. Bei einem weiteren Workshop zum Thema Policy Planning, gaben unsere Gäste Andreas Müller und Flurina Wäspi wertvolle Inputs. Am Sonntag folgte dann eine Stadtführung mitsamt Gespräch mit dem Präsidenten der verfassunggebenden Versammlung des Kantons Jura, François Lachat. Er erzählte lebhaft von der institutionellen Geburt des Kantons der 80er Jahre und den gelernten politischen Lektionen, die auch heute noch relevant sind.

During the month of October, you will have the possibility to decide on the future of Swiss educational mobility in our events in Geneva (3 October), Bern (10 October), and Zurich (2 November). Your voices are important in the debate on international mobility, so don’t miss out!
Futures Champions - Switzerland and the Global Health agenda
Furthermore, stay tuned for the final issue of our Futures Champions project, a foraus project aimed at increasing young people's participation in democratic processes, on 21 November at 18:30: All eyes are geared towards Basel, where we will discuss the future of the (Swiss) healthcare system and our countries’ role in the advancement of the Global Health agenda. Registrations will be open soon!
