Our FFT team placed emphasis on Fantasy drafts and a strong minicamp performance from a notable rookie wide receiver the last couple of days. With those topics in mind, some very interesting ideas and thoughts came to the forefront in Dave Richard and Dan Schneier's latest writeups. |
Rome Odunze had some advice for Fantasy managers far and wide: "Put me in the flex right now," Odunze told CBS Sports during Bears minicamp. Odunze has been impressive so far and is already getting first-team reps. In this article, Dave identifies traits that could make him a valuable flex option in 2024. |

Dan Schneier recapped our PPR FFT magazine league draft. This draft will be analyzed, and you'll be able to find the full results in bookstores and airports this summer. In the meantime, Dan has provided us with his thoughts on some of the more intriguing selections in this draft. |
Put Rome Odunze in the flex right now |
The Chicago Bears selected Rome Odunze with their No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and he already performing as advertised. We're all well aware of Odunze's ball skills and overall athleticism, but what has teammates and coaches raving about him is how quickly he's grasping the playbook. |
|
According to Keenan Allen, Odunze looks great out there on the field. "He's a guy who stepped in, he's been with the ones right off the bat and running around pretty good. His routes, he knows what he's doing, his responsibilities, and that's huge. First coming in, we haven't even got to training camp and he already kind of knows where to go, where to line up, where to be at. So that's huge." |
Not only does he understand what to do when plays are on schedule, he's already showcasing his understanding of what to do on off-schedule plays. Dave Richard details a rep during 7-on-7 drills in which Williams left the pocket and Odunze correctly applied the scramble drill rules to present himself as a target for quarterback Caleb Williams. The play resulted in a big completion to Odunze who continues to work hard to get on the same page as his quarterback. |
|
While Odunze is imploring Fantasy managers to "put him in the flex," he's going to have a hard time putting up respectable Fantasy numbers. He'll be competing for targets with D.J. Moore, and Keenan Allen who have a competition of their own brewing. Allen told the media that he and Moore are racing to see who can get to 1,000 yards first this season. Odunze wants in on the race to 1,000, but I have a hard time believing that he'll reach that number given the talent of Moore and Allen, despite Odunze's glowing minicamp reviews. |
Full-point PPR FFT magazine league draft takeaways |
This draft was for the CBS FFT magazine which will be available for purchase this summer. The best part about this is our staff also plays this league out. One of the things that stood out about this draft was how quickly wide receivers flew off the draft board. I happened to wait until Round 2 to take my first wide receiver and it was slim pickings at the position by the time my pick came around. Go wide receiver early and often if you want to ensure that you acquire the production you seek at the position. |
|
Because the more proven wide receivers were taken so early in the draft, many of the participants in this draft were faced with a tough question: Do you take a less productive veteran, or bet on the upside of a rookie wide receiver? For the bulk of the draft, most participants elected to do the former. Marvin Harrison Jr. was taken in Round 2 but after him, Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. Went in Round 5. Meanwhile, rookie wide receivers like Keon Coleman and Rome Odunze went in Rounds 8 and 9, respectively. |
|
One of the more surprising aspects of this draft was how far the quarterbacks fell. The first quarterback wasn't taken until the second pick in Round 4. While Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Jalen Hurts are all listed with a higher ADP, it was two-time MVP Lamar Jackson who was the first quarterback off the board. For more insight as to why Jackson might have come off the board earlier than expected, be sure to give Dan's full-point PPR FFT magazine league draft takeaways a read. |
