Dear Mauldin Economics Reader,
SIC 2022 Daily Updates

Dear Reader,

As usual, the start of the Strategic Investment Conference didn’t disappoint.

Perpetual audience favorite David Rosenberg made no secret of his belief that we are “in the eighth inning” of the business cycle and heading into recession fast.

He predicted a “massive contraction of demand” and criticized Corporate America for using the crisis to “dramatically boost their margins,” launching “four years’ worth of price increases in one year.”

He named a dozen assets you’ll want to own or avoid in this recession. (Remarkably, commodities were one of the don’ts.)

Even though you didn’t get to see the first-day livestream, you won’t miss a thing. Your Pass includes video/audio recordings, transcripts, and (as available) presenters’ slides from the conference.

We also heard from the man who has his finger on the pulse of the nation—top-rated political strategist and pollster Dr. Frank Luntz, who also happens to be a genuinely nice person.

According to his polls, most people are so disillusioned with the two major political parties that in 2024, a third-party candidate may have a real chance of winning.

Dr. Luntz’s astute observations and forecasts are full of surprises. He predicts that changing voter demographics will affect the 2022 and 2024 elections—but the demographic group he says is the most influential is probably not the one you’re thinking of.

More from Day 1:

  • Liz Ann Sonders, managing director and chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab & Co., talked with Mark Yusko about Fed policy, rising interest rates, and her uncommon stance on value investing.
  • Morgan Housel, partner at The Collaborative Fund and author of the bestseller, The Psychology of Money, shared stories of wealth and loss, and explained why we can’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to investing.
  • Washington DC insider Bruce Mehlman showed us the prevailing macro trends and what it means to live in a “post-post-Cold War world.”
  • The day closed out with a Crypto Currency Panel featuring Dan Tapiero of 10T Holdings and Andrew Keys of DARMA Capital.

There’s much more to come. Tomorrow, for example, we’ll start the day with General Sir Richard Shirreff, former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander of NATO Europe and geopolitical analyst Jacob Shapiro... followed by The Carlyle Group co-founder and co-chairman David Rubenstein... and many more.
