There were loads of surprises in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft as Round 1 skewed heavily toward the offensive side of the football. Six of the first 12 picks were quarterbacks and the first 14 selections were offensive players. Each of these happenings were unprecedented and set NFL Draft records.
To summarize what we witnessed in Round 1, Jamey Eisenberg wrote about how the historic 2024 QB class ranks for Fantasy Football and provides redraft advice and more in his latest piece. You won't want to miss out on which quarterback Jamey tabs as a handcuff candidate, and a rookie QB who is worth taking a late round flier on in Superflex and two-quarterback formats.
Heath Cummings pieced together a Day 2 and 3 preview, which includes sleepers and teams looking to add quality depth at the RB, WR, and TE positions within the next two days. It's going to be very exciting to see where the likes of Braelon Allen, Keon Coleman and Jaheim Bell end up.
As expected, the Chicago Bears took Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick, hoping his talent will help the storied franchise return to glory. The Washington Commanders subsequently selected Jayden Daniels as their franchise quarterback. After that, the quarterback selections began to feel like somewhat of a reach.
Despite signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million in guarantees, the Atlanta Falcons still selected Michael Penix Jr . with the No. 8 overall pick. It's important to remember that Cousins tore his Achilles nine weeks after Aaron Rodgers' injury. While no one will take Penix in one-quarterback redraft leagues, Jamey suggests that taking a late-round flier on Penix may not be a bad idea for Fantasy managers looking to handcuff Cousins.
I completely understand the Falcons taking a quarterback here; however, the Cousins trade combined with the selection of Penix ties up a lot of resources in one position. In my humble opinion, trading for Justin Fields would have allowed the Falcons to acquire their quarterback of the future and freed them up to address other positions of need in the draft. Trading for Cousins, then drafting a soon-to-be 24-year-old quarterback with the No. 8 pick in the draft seems a bit superfluous.
The Minnesota Vikings thought highly enough of J.J. McCarthy to trade up from No. 11 to No. 10 to grab their quarterback of the future. Jamey believes McCarthy is worth a late-round pick in redraft leagues but should be a starter in Superflex and two-quarterback formats. McCarthy is seemingly set up well for success. He'll be playing for an offensive coordinator who is no stranger to calling vertical shots, and he's got an outstanding trio of pass-catchers in Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson. Once he breaks into the starting lineup, don't be surprised if he becomes a Fantasy starter as the season progresses.
The Vikings taking McCarthy wasn't much of a surprise, but the Denver Broncos selecting Bo Nix at No. 12 was certainly unexpected. The Broncos recently traded a sixth-round pick to the New York Jets for a seventh-round pick and former BYU star and Utah native Zach Wilson. Wilson (25), Nix (24), and Jarret Stidham (27) will battle it out in the summer for QB1. It's going to be interesting to see if either quarterback matches or exceeds Russell Wilson's production from last season.
In Heath Cummings' Day 2 and 3 preview, he highlights running back, wide receiver, and tight end sleepers, as well as teams looking to fill those positions. According to Heath, Jonathon Brooks has the most upside among running backs, while Trey Benson has the highest floor in the NFL Draft.
Brooks is coming off an ACL injury, but once his knee is 100% again, he will be a three-down back. Many analysts rank Brooks as the top running back, but for me, Benson is the top back in this class. I wouldn't be surprised to see Benson land in Cincinnati, while Brooks makes the short drive from Austin to Dallas, Texas, as a member of the Dallas Cowboys.
When it comes to wide receiver, top pass-catchers like Adonai Mitchell, Jermaine Burton, Keon Coleman, and Ladd McConkey are still available. While several fans were upset about the Bills passing up on their first-round pick, they're in prime position to make up for it at the top of Round 2. Now that Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis have left Buffalo for "greener pastures," Buffalo will likely look to revamp their wide receiver corps. If they select Mitchell or Coleman, it will go a long way toward helping them replace production lost during free agency.
Looking back on this tight end class five years from now, we'll see that it was teeming with talent. Brock Bowers isn't the only tight end in this bunch capable of producing stellar numbers in the NFL. The likes of Jaheim Bell, Ben Sinnott, and Cade Stover exist. And there's another tight end we've yet to mention to this point: Brevyn Spann-Ford out of Minnesota.
At 6-foot-6, 267 pounds, Spann-Ford plays with the athleticism of a smaller player, but when the ball is in the air, he plays up to every bit of his 6-foot-6 frame. He plays with great intensity as a blocker and can stay on the field for all three downs. Whether he goes in the middle of the draft or toward the end, he's going to make his presence felt on an NFL roster, and I look forward to watching him become part of the youth movement we're seeing at the tight end position.
