TOP OF THE AGENDA | Russia detains Uzbek man over general's Moscow assassination |
|
| | The explosive device which killed Lt Gen Igor Kirillov is believed to have been hidden in a scooter. Credit: EPA | A 29-year-old man from Uzbekistan has been detained over the killing of a senior Russian general and his assistant, according to Moscow. Lt Gen Igor Kirillov, who was responsible for the Russian army’s chemical weapons, was outside a residential block in the Russian capital early on Tuesday when an explosive device hidden in a scooter was detonated remotely. A Ukrainian source previously told the BBC that the country's security service was behind the killing, and that Kirillov was "a legitimate target" and had allegedly carried out war crimes. In a video published by Russia's security service, the purported suspect appears to say he was offered a reward of $100,000 and permission to move to the EU in exchange for carrying out the killing. |

Analysis: The killing of Kirillov pierces Moscow's air of normality and is a wake-up call for the Russian capital, writes Russia editor Steve Rosenberg.

BEYOND THE HEADLINES | Trouble in Arctic town as polar bears and locals face warming world |
|
| | | The polar bear population decline in the Western Hudson Bay has been linked to warming temperatures. Credit: Victoria Gill/BBC | In the polar bear capital of the world, a warming climate could spell danger for both the animals and the people who live there. The bears of Canada's Hudson Bay face starvation as temperatures increase and the ice they need to hunt seals from disappears, meaning they are being forced to spend more time on land, bringing them to residents. |

And finally... | Don't worry, this isn't classified and by telling you, we won't have to kill you: such has been the impact of Tom Cruise's action roles that he has been awarded the US Navy's highest civilian honour. Not only did his lead role in Top Gun shoot him to the top of the Hollywood A-list, but the film's record-breaking success spiked military enlistment. | |
