Keep children loving reading over the winter break. Send books home for them to read independently and for parents to read to them. Remind parents that we have a series of bite-size informational videos designed especially for them to use when supporting their children at home - find them on our Parents page and on our YouTube channel.
You can also click here to find some helpful tips from Oxford Owl on how parents can encourage reading in the holidays. For some expert advice, read this article about avoiding the summer slump (it applies just as much in winter!).
A recent survey by National Literacy Trust revealed that one in 11 said they do not have a book of their own at home. For children from disadvantaged backgrounds, this figure rises to one in 8. Why not donate to BookTrust this winter? Giving £10 will allow them to send a surprise hardback book gift to a child in care.

Read Write Inc. Phonics Book Bag Books are engaging stories to support children with additional reading practice at home. The 75 new storybooks are uniquely matched to the existing Read Write Inc. Phonics Storybooks. Children read sounds and words they know well to help them make even faster progress in reading.
Children in Read Write Inc. schools trialled the stories and loved them! They include specially written advice for parents and carers.
Available January 2018, the new Read Write Inc. Phonics Nursery Pack contains resources to teach phonics and develop vocabulary. It provides nursery staff with the tools they need to ensure every child learns to read confidently, right from the start.
The new resources can be purchased individually or in a pack containing a Nursery handbook, resources for teaching the Set 1 Speed Sounds (flash cards, picture cards and a sound-picture frieze), a Fred Frog toy, Nursery Green Word Cards and Ten Sound Blending Books.

The new Year 1 Assessment focuses on the sounds children must know to pass the Phonics Screening Check and helps you identify:
Sounds that need teaching or reviewing in class time
Children who need more practice and/or one-to-one tutoring
Speed Sound cards to send home for practice.
Use it to check progress in December, March and May of all children in Year 1 and children in Year 2 re-sitting the check. This assessment is in addition to half-termly assessments for grouping children.
