Exciting Training Update: Our Action Leadership Training is Evolving
We are delighted to announce that in 2017, our Action Leadership Training is evolving into Reading Leader Training.

We know how busy Reading Leaders are, so we're condensing three days of training into two and reducing the cost to schools. We've also made sure it's completely aligned with the 2016 edition of Read Write Inc. Phonics. It's the same training, just streamlined!

Day 1 - Data and Progress - will help you to:
  • Use Read Write Inc. data to accelerate progress
  • Assess for accuracy and fluency
  • Group carefully
  • Set targets for one-to-one tutoring
  • Support one-to-one tutors
  • Prepare for the phonics screening check.
Day 2 - Supportive Leadership - will help you to:
  • Establish support for all teachers
  • Set up weekly practice sessions
  • Coach teachers during reading sessions
  • Use effective face-to-face feedback following observations
  • Organise half-termly pupil progress meetings.
Book the first day of training (£150 + VAT) and save £50 on the cost of the second day - add 'SECOND DAY DISCOUNT' in the comments box when you book.

If you have any questions about your Reading Leader Training bookings or which day you should book, please contact our office team on 01275 331 230 or admin@ruthmiskin.com.

Book Bands should be abandoned, says the IFERI
Do you know why books are placed in bands? What are the criteria? Murky boundaries and non-existent grading has created a harmful Book Banding system that arrests development. An article by Gordon Askew, published by the International Foundation for Effective Reading Instruction, argues the case for aBOOKbandoning.

Congratulations to all of our Ruth Miskin Training Badge Schools
Schools who demonstrate high fidelity to teaching Read Write Inc. Phonics have a rapid impact on children's progress. We have awarded badges to the very best of these schools.

All the certificates for this year’s badge schools have now been sent out along with emailed instructions for how to put the badge and link on your school’s website. Please contact us if you have not received an e-mail.
Ruth Miskin Training on the other side of the globe
Our first 10 schools in the remote Northern Territory of Australia are working hard to teach every child to read. All of their pupils are from the local indigenous communities. One school already has their most vulnerable pupils reading the Ditties after their September training. In the photo above, they are reading a story about 'a fun hat', so have dressed up accordingly!

After their first lesson on the Red Ditty Books Philip Hearnden, Teaching Principal of Baniyala School, told us, "It went really well… I really like that the students were able to work out all the words. Our writing was great too."
Watch this space for free Screening Check Prep events
We will be hosting a series of free events around the country during the Spring Term to help you prepare for the Phonics Screening Check, which commences Monday 12 June 2017.

Keep checking the events page of our website. We will also be tweeting and e-mailing about the events, as well as posting on Facebook.
NOTICE: Booking in-school training for September INSET days

We're already starting to get in-school bookings on INSET days for September 2017. If your school is interested in using your INSET days to continue professional development, consider booking now to get the dates you want.

We don't invoice until the week of the training, so you can book days for the academic year without having to use this year's budget.
In the news this term...

Pupils who learn to speak confidently do better in life. A study reported in The Guardian claims there is a lack of verbal communication tracking in schools.

The National Literacy Trust and Save the Children have co-authored a strategy to ‘get England’s children reading’ as part of their 'Read On. Get On.' campaign. The strategy covers early and primary years and sets out 10 action points. You can read the full report here.

“The things you do at home…will help them do so much better at school.”  In a new video, The Welsh Government says education begins at home. Watch it here.

How teachers can inspire their children to dream

"If there’s one thing a teacher can do to get children reading, it’s introduce them to great books. This is an exciting opportunity – children’s books are dreamy, powerful and groundbreaking and there’s more to choose from than ever before," writes Natalie Boon, Director of MyBookBlog.
