CMS reports highlight common problems with fire sprinkler systems

As in years past, sprinkler head problems were at the heart of many of the citations given to the 86% of hospitals that failed that fire extinguishing system maintenance standard, making it the most cited standard among hospitals last year. Sprinkler systems can be troublesome for other healthcare facilities, too.

NFPA fast-tracks new standard to respond to active shooter incidents

Spurred by coordination lapses in the aftermath of recent U.S. mass shootings, the NFPA unveiled NFPA 3000, which is designed to help communities prepare for multiple casualties. Healthcare facilities should use the new standard to review their readiness for responding to mass casualty events and to improve coordination.

Majority of hospitals not compliant with TJC's top LS, EC standards

All of the 10 most-cited standards by The Joint Commission in 2017 were in or linked to the Environment of Care and Life Safety chapters. Those requirements have gone through major revisions, and CMS has voiced concerns that accrediting organizations are not being tough enough when surveying the physical environment.
