Saint Nick: The Real Santa Claus

When I was a child, each of us hung a stocking on the mantle, above the fireplace, the night before the feast of Saint Nicholas. To our delight, the next morning there would be candy or small gifts in our stockings. The feast of Saint Nicholas is celebrated on December 6 because early accounts say he was martyred on that day.
