Saints continue to tweak their roster

Good morning, and welcome to the Saints Insider Newsletter for Tuesday, May 16. Have you signed any new players yet today?

When we spoke to Saints head coach Dennis Allen this past weekend, he suggested the team was not yet finished adding to its 2023 roster. Monday, the team put its money where its mouth is.

The Saints added an intriguing offensive weapon, signing veteran receiver James Washington to a free agent contract. Washington is the third new receiver to join the Saints' ranks this offseason, joining Bryan Edwards and A.T. Perry in adding to a group that already included Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, Rashid Shaheed and Tre'Quan Smith.

What are they getting in Washington? How about some speed. During his four years in Pittsburgh, Washington recorded 16 catches of 30 or more yards — a number that probably could've been higher if he wasn't playing with quarterbacks like Devlin Hodges and Mason Rudolph.

It's no sure bet that Washington makes the roster. The last time he saw the field was with the Cowboys last year, and he didn't record a catch after spending the first 14 weeks on the shelf with a foot injury. But, at the least, he is a low-risk, high-reward signing, and those are the types of moves the Saints should be making in May.

Here's what else is on the wire today

  • Mickey Loomis and Dennis Allen are optimistic about new free agent signing Foster Moreau participating right away. Beat writer Terrin Waack has more.
  • Washington wasn't the only move the Saints made Monday. New Orleans shuffled up the bottom of its roster after rookie minicamp.
  • In case you missed it, Waack wrote a nice story about rookie offensive lineman Nick Saldiveri's mother, Jennifer Townsend, and her role in raising a future NFL player after his father passed away from a heart attack when Saldiveri was 2 years old.
  • Speaking of rookie camp, here were my five main takeaways after spending some time around the newest Saints this weekend.

That's all we've got for now. Thanks as always for reading, and keep it locked to nola.com for all the latest Saints news.

Cheers,

Luke Johnson
