Saints hit the ground running on the opening day of NFL free agency

Good morning and welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for Thursday, March 16.

The Saints were byper-active on the official first day of free agency, adding three veteran players to address major needs on the roster:

--Running back Jamaal Williams, who led the NFL in rushing touchdowns last season.

--Defensive tackle Khalen Saunders, who had a sack and tackle for loss for the Kansas City Chiefs in their Super Bowl LVII victory.

--Defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd, a massive 6-foot-4, 300-pound run stopper from the New York Jets.

The Saints entered free agency with only one defensive tackle on the roster so the position was a priority, as was running back, because of the potential suspension of star Alvin Kamara.

Not all the news was positive. The Saints lost one of their own free agents, when return specialist Deonte Harty signed a two-year contract with the Buffalo Bills.

If you're having trouble keeping up with all of the comings and goings, check out our handy Free Agent Tracker, compiled daily by beat writer Terrin Waack.

And finally, quarterback Jameis Winston explained why he elected to re-sign with the Saints this offseason in an emotional social media post on Wednesday.

That's it for today, but we'll have more coverage throughout the week as NFL free agency continues to roll on. Be sure to check NOLA.com for daily updates and analysis from our crack Saints coverage team.

Until next time, take care and thanks for reading,

Jeff Duncan
