Welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for Thursday, April 21. Sean Payton and Drew Brees were reunited for the pro-am tournament at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Wednesday. The iconic former Saints coach-quarterback tandem teamed in a star-laden quintet that included reigning Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and Ryan Palmer and attracted the largest gallery of the day. Payton and Brees traded good-natured jabs with the PGA Tour pros throughout their round but ultimately left the TPC of Louisiana with lighter pockets. I followed the group for most the back nine and had a chance to visit with both recent retirees after the round to ask them what it was like to play with the world's top-ranked player. My story from Avondale, where, let's just say, Payton wasn't quite as successful as he was the previous day in the Celebrity Shootout. In other Saints-related news, the Saints are ranked among the favorites to land disgruntled San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who has asked the team to trade him. Could the Saints be in the mix for the star wideout? Zach Ewing has the story. And finally, leave it to mischievous Saints defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson to turn a kids' football camp into a troll job of Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Tom Brady. Patrick Magee has the story on all of CJGJ's All-Pro pettiness. We'll have more on the upcoming NFL Draft in the days ahead so keep checking back on NOLA.com for all out coverage as draft day nears. Cheers, Jeff Duncan |
