| Good morning, happy Saturday, and welcome to the February 24 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. The folks who handle the salary cap accounting over at 5800 Airline Drive are very happy today. An unexpected windfallThe NFL announced Friday morning that it was setting the 2024 salary cap at $255.4 million — an unprecedented year-to-year jump of more than $30 million, and a good bit higher than most estimates at what the figure may be. This is obviously good news for the Saints, who are in the midst of their annual cap space clearing frenzy. Earlier this week, the Saints were looking at clearing roughly $80 million in cap space just to be compliant. After Friday's news (and a couple big contract restructures, more on that below), that number is already down to roughly $40 million. Beat writer Matthew Paras details what this means for the Saints here. Carr officially restructuredWe reported a few weeks back at the Senior Bowl that the Saints were planning to restructure Derek Carr's deal, and they made the move official Friday, freeing up more than $23 million in 2024 cap space. As you should be well aware of by now, this is not just free money. By moving Carr's cap hit into the future, the Saints are contractually tying themselves to their signal caller. Paras, again, has the details. Kubiak on KubiakWe in the New Orleans media have not yet gotten a chance to meet Klint Kubiak, the Saints new offensive coordinator, but columnist Jeff Duncan did the next best thing: He caught up with his dad. Gary Kubiak is a Super Bowl winning head coach who played a big role in revolutionizing the way NFL teams play offense, and he gave an interesting answer to Duncan when asked about what the Saints offense may look like under his son's direction. It’s going to be the Klint Kubiak offense. “Klint is going to put his spin on it,” Gary said. “It’s going to be his offense. I told him, let’s take it and make it the New Orleans offense.” This one is worth some time this morning. Indy's callingSpeaking of Kubiak, he's leading the charge on what is sure to be a new-look offense in New Orleans next season, meaning the type of player the Saints are looking for is likely to change.
