When you have a long-term illness, even simple things like laughter can fall by the wayside. That was the case for me. My painful autoimmune disorder proved to be almost impossible to treat, leaving me housebound and frustrated most days. But I had a secret weapon against unhappiness: Lucy. Lu was the queen of my house — a beautiful, if somewhat elderly, little tortoiseshell kitty who enjoyed a benevolent reign from her armchair throne. If there was anything Lu brought me, it was the simple joy of being her subject.
