WEB WATERCOOLER Still shaking my head: Facebook and Instagram proudly announced this week theyโve closed the accounts of Iranโs supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Just one question: Why, in heavenโs name, did the Ayatollah even have an Instagram and Facebook account to begin with? ๐ต Buy ads for your business? Meta is passing along Appleโs 30% fee when you promote posts on Facebook or Instagram via the iOS apps. Use the browser on your phone or the web version to skirt the extra charge, marketing folks. Not surprising but really gross: A woman in Connecticut started chemotherapy to fight cancer. It wasnโt long before her mailbox was full of ads for cremation services. Howโd she get on their list? A data broker site sold her info. Medical information isnโt as protected as weโd like to think. Traffic deaths are way up: Thatโs the explanation for all the speed cameras being installed across the U.S. Is it truly a way to make streets safer or a cash grab? Good points on both sides here. ๐ฎ Mario vs. Donkey Kong: The plumber takes on the giant gorilla in a remake of the 2004 Game Boy Advance title. This one has lots of puzzles and a cooperative mode to play with pals โฆ or the kids. Download for the Switch. Whereโs Adam, though? OpenAIโs new humanoid robot, Eve, has claws for hands, rolls around on wheels and features an LED face like a Tamagotchi. It also does a heck of a job in factory work. Watch it here. Boseโs new earbuds donโt go inside your ears: Theyโre meant to wrap around the outside of your ear, and a silicone arm pipes in the music. Smart if youโre a cyclist, walker or runner, so you can hear cars and other people. And, score, 48 hours of battery life. Check โem out. โ๏ธ Landlines are back, cord and all: Call it 2000s nostalgia from the Gen Z crowd. A 24-year-old told The Guardian that talking on her landline makes her โfeel like the main character in my favorite TV shows.โ Cute. |
DEVICE ADVICE Stop the constant interruptions ๐คณ๐ป Does it bother you when youโre talking with someone and they get a notification on their phone, look down and read it? Itโs like your convo with them wasnโt as important as knowing the exact moment someone liked a tweet or posted a new vacation photo. So rude. My solution: Let notifications come through at specific times. This way, you can stay focused on what matters. On iPhone: Go to Settings > Notifications and scroll to select the app for which you want to receive notifications. (NOTE: Youโll need to enable Allow Notifications for this to work.) Tap Notification Grouping. Here, you can choose Automatic, By App or Off. To batch your notifications, select By App. In iOS 15 and later, you can also receive a summary of notifications at specific times. To set this up, go to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary and enable it. On Android: Go to Settings > Apps & Notifications. Steps may vary slightly depending on your phone. Tap to see a list of all your apps. Pick the app you want batch notifications for, then tap Notifications. On the next window, look for an option called Notification Grouping or Bundled Notifications. Turn it on or select how you want your appโs notifications grouped. |

TECH LIFE UPGRADES ๐ Night moves: Your computerโs Night mode is easier on your peepers before bed โ and not a waste of money, like blue-light glasses. On a Mac, find it under System Preferences > Displays > Night Shift. Windows buddies, go to Start > Settings > System > Display > Night light. ๐ Easier than bookmarks: Want all your tabs to open up when you start your browser? In Chrome, click the three vertical dots, then Settings. Click On startup > Continue where you left off. Steps for Safari, Firefox and Edge here. โ Add a latte: Target is luring people into using its app and Drive Up curbside service with caffeine โ and I bet it'll work. At more than 1,700 locations, you can add a Starbucks drink to your order. Yep, you stay in the car, and someone will bring out your toilet paper and a frappuccino. ๐๏ธ Still writing checks? Use a pen (4-pack for $10) with specially formulated ink that gets trapped in paper, helping to prevent criminal check washing and other document alteration. One wrong move: Youโre doing some math on your calculator app and one wrong tap ruins it all. Not anymore. Swipe to the right or left to delete the last character. My high school math teacher called me average. How mean. |

BY THE NUMBERS $8,000 price drop For Lucid Motorโs cheapest EV, the Air Pure. It now starts at $69,900. Iโd steer clear. Fisker did the same thing with its hybrid before the company went out of business. $90M in revenue Video game Baldur's Gate 3 brought in for Hasbro last year. The game is based on Dungeons & Dragons. Old-school nerds, this one is for you! (Yep, a few folks at the office here play.) 5-second detection Scientists say a $5 circuit board can sample saliva to detect breast cancer. The test strips cost a few cents each. As someone who hates cancer, I love this. |
WHAT THE TECH? This souped-up 1958 Ford Country Squire camper cost around $3,000. |
UNTIL NEXT TIME ... ๐ฒ The answer: 50%. It's best to keep your e-bike's battery in a cool, dry place, not fully charged and not totally empty, so anywhere between 40% and 60% is best.
