Fireside Listening for the Season Ahead |
|
| | | I was lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy of Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology, but the audio version, read by the author, promises to take those stories to another level. Fiction offerings include Mette Ivie Harrison's latest mystery starring Mormon bishop's wife Linda Wallheim and Cara Hoffman's Athens-set Running. Listeners for whom the short, dark days of February lend themselves to exploring the darker side of nonfiction can choose from new releases on such subjects as plagues, fraud, mutiny, cannibalism, and transhumanism. Teens (and plenty of adults) will want to seek out Angie Thomas's Black Lives Matter-inspired The Hate U Give, space-minded middle graders will get excited about an Astronaut Instruction Manual written just for them, and young listeners will be delighted to check in on the world of Farmer Brown. Plus, in her Fast Five spotlight, narrator Nicola Barber sheds some light on the glamorous world of Law & Order extras. |

| | | | Fraud, Plagues, & Cannibalism | Nonfiction True tales of adjusting to life after a stroke, returning Nazi-looted books to owners' decendents, and a "perfectly natural" history of cannibalism—human and otherwise. |

| | | | | | Fast Five with Nicola Barber What was your favorite TV role? The episode of Law & Order where I spent four hours in makeup with two artists drawing custom tattoos all over my legs and neck, only to appear for all of 15 seconds in a scene. It was pretty awesome!
What was the first audiobook you narrated? A Short History of Women by Kate Walbert.
What’s your favorite accent to narrate? Scottish! Because my Mum is Scottish, and I lived in Scotland until I was four years old.
Whose acting performances do you admire most? Male: Christopher Evan Welch in Silicon Valley—the most fantastic and detailed character work I have ever seen. Female: Toni Collette in almost anything. She’s incredible.
What’s your motto? ¡Pura Vida! [pure life] |
