‘My best day in the NHL so far’: Salt Lake shows up for new hockey club
Thousands descended on the Delta Center Wednesday to welcome Utah’s new NHL team to its new home. An hour before the doors opened, lines of fans vying to be among the lucky ones to be inside with the team wrapped around the outside of the arena.
At the Delta Center, fans enjoyed hockey-themed games, face-painting, live music, free food and even 4v4 roller hockey. They were then invited inside and introduced to the team’s players, head coach André Tourigny and general manager Bill Armstrong in a special program.
Earlier in the day, hundreds of youth hockey players and their parents met the team at Signature Aviation Airport in Salt Lake City. The young skaters donned their team sweaters and held signs sporting messages such as “I skipped school to be here,” “I play goalie too” and even “actually, Salt Lake DOESN’T suck,” referring to the infamous arena-wide chant at the Coyotes’ final game before relocating to the Beehive State.
Players and coaches said they were overwhelmed with emotion at the scene. Armstrong said he had a tear in his eye.

Rep. John Curtis visited Utah’s oil country just after it was incorporated into his 3rd Congressional District with the firm conviction that showing up and sitting down with constituents was the surest way to change hearts and simultaneously keep his finger on the Utah pulse.
The initial hesitancy of Uinta Basin petroleum producers toward the “climate guy” quickly dissolved after the congressman heard their concerns and explained his approach to a conservation-conscious conservatism.
In a conversation like countless others he’s had with rural residents and skeptical lawmakers, Curtis framed fossil fuels and free market fixes as the solution, not an obstacle, to the country’s energy and environmental demands. When he was up for reelection several months later, Utah’s north eastern counties voted for Curtis by larger margins than anywhere else.
