• After Mayor Samantha Paradis decided not to seek re-election, she did something that other mayors in the past have done: She signed the mayoral desk in the council chambers at Belfast City Hall.
  
  But unlike other mayors, Paradis also inscribed a message on the inside of the desk drawer: “Don’t let the bastards get you down.”

• It all depends on whether those patrons’ towns are funding the library out of their municipal budgets, and it’s part of a larger change the library is making as it tries to become less dependent on Ellsworth tax dollars.

• Old Town city employees gathered by the windows of the city council chambers in City Hall on Thursday morning to watch as the look of the city’s Main Street changed forever.
  

• The town wants to find out what else it can do, if anything, to help boost the scarce availability of affordable housing in Bar Harbor. Housing prices are high on Mount Desert Island as a whole — and often out of the reach of young families — because landlords can make more money renting out houses by the week to summer tourists than they can to year-round residents.

• Though the Bangor City Forest is located at the edge of a shopping mecca, the property gives visitors a true taste of Maine wilderness. Surrounded by other parcels of conserved land, it’s an important place for local wildlife. Black bears, white-tailed deer, porcupines, snowshoe hares, moose and a variety of other creatures have been spotted in the forest by recreationists. Many of the trails are named after these animals.
