Become a London architecture aficionado

Baroque palaces, Brutalist skyscrapers, an old petrol station inspired by Japanese pagodas… London is home to all sorts of iconic buildings. But how much do you really know about them? Our archive offers a crash course on the capital’s architecture, from guides to help you spot the differences between different eras, to deep dives on structures of historical or cultural importance. So you’ll look like a right smarty pants on your next stroll through the city.

Learn how to tell Tudor buildings from medieval ones or Georgian from Victorian. More into 20th century design? Discover London’s hidden art deco gems, experience the whimsy of postmodernism, and marvel (or baulk) at the austere beauty of brutalism. We’ve even mapped out the work of architects like Sir Christopher Wren (fancy churches), to Leslie Green (those iconic oxblood tube stations). But if that’s a bit niche for your taste, you could just spend the day ogling miscellaneous architectural oddities instead.

Once you’ve worked your way through all of that, you should be in prime position to take our London architecture quiz! Give a go via the big blue button
