Hello Voornaam,

The JSE followed global markets lower yesterday, sliding 2.5%, while the rand weakened and precious metals tumbled on concern about renewed lockdowns across Europe due to a second wave of Covid-19.

AngloGold Ashanti's announcement that it was reinstating production guidance for the year was overshadowed by a sharp decline in the gold price, which slumped to its lowest in more than a month as the dollar strengthened. Sasol dropped more than 5% as the oil price also declined by more than 3%. After hours, the energy and chemicals group said power at its Lake Charles Chemicals Complex in the US was still not fully restored after Hurricane Laura swept across the Gulf coast last month.

More on those stories to follow, along with results from aluminium products group Hulamin and print and publishing group Caxton. Meanwhile, Arrowhead says it is making progress with asset disposals as it bolsters its balance sheet to shield it against Covid-19.

I hope you have a good day.

The latest from Ingham Analytics

Ingham Analytics issued "BA(D) 900 news?" last Friday, analysing the July 2020 BA900 returns for the South African banking system. If you found "BA900 isn't a British Airways service to Jo'burg" useful this latest note takes it a stage further with up to date data and analysis on the South African banking system in the midst of Covid-19.

"Steel yourself" this past week relooked at what's moving the iron ore and steel market. Ingham Analytics have cautioned about getting too enthusiastic on iron ore linked shares despite the price of iron ore being at multi-year highs.

Watch out for their latest view on gold - investors remain bullish with inflows this year the highest in several years and they have thoughts on what gold ETFs to go for. In addition, with US stock markets selling off, top trader Andrew Kinsey has advice on where to next.
