Sassy or Spiritual: Why Not Both?

Have you ever felt like you had to choose between landing a punchline and being treated like an equal? If so, well, welcome to the sisterhood. Generations of women have wondered if their sense of humor is at odds with their chance of being respected.

But Leah Boyd, better known as @LeahBSassy on Twitter, may just be a sign that the tide is changing.

“As a recent seminary graduate, I see her as representing a larger trend,” writes Kaitlyn Schiess. “While many of our predecessors in theological education had to fight to be taken seriously in evangelical spaces, sometimes the only one or one of just a few in an MDiv program, more women are finding solidarity online today. Boyd’s freedom to poke fun at evangelical culture is refreshing for a generation who doesn’t want to rehash the same gender-role debates and baggage they’ve inherited.”

Whether at work or with friends, studying Scripture or sharing an idea, remember: you’re a whole person whose personality traits don’t contradict each other. There is room in this world for every part of you—even a dash of sass.
