I almost didn’t go to work that Saturday morning because of Hootie, our fifteen-year-old Terrier mix. I told myself I was being silly; there was no cause for concern. Hootie was old, but he was in good health and showed no signs of separation anxiety. He and our Doxie mix, Roxanne, had the run of the house, plus a dog door to the back yard.

Besides, my husband Lee and I were home with them most of the week, and only left them on weekends when we sold our artwork at an artisans’ market in San Francisco, a half-hour away. They were always fine when we returned home around seven in the evening, overjoyed to see us and demanding their dinner. (Keep reading)
