School Choice Last week was school choice week, and if you didn’t know, you know now that school choice is extremely important to me. If this pandemic has taught us anything, it is that school choice matters now more than ever. With people’s livelihoods being threatened and schools being closed, many Americans have faced unexpected challenges this year. This impact was felt immediately, but we still cannot fully understand the long-term effects of keeping our children at home, especially in low-income or single parent households. It is vital that we open up more educational options for our children. Last week, I reintroduced the CHOICE Act. This bill will increase educational options for American families by supporting parents while they find a school that best fits their child’s needs, authorizing grants for programs for children with disabilities, and more. I will continue to fight for school choice, because when families have a choice, children succeed. Officer Sicknick Our country faced tragedy in the horrific attack on our nation’s Capitol last month. We must always remember and honor the selfless heroism and bravery of all the officers who defended democracy that day. That’s why I introduced a bill with Representative Ralph Norman to honor a hero who ultimately gave his life that day: Officer Brian Sicknick. Officer Sicknick risked his life serving our country overseas and lived a life of selfless heroism, but he gave his life defending our Capitol from threats here at home. The bill we introduced last week called for him to lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda. Our bill would also create the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund. Congressional leadership took our bill to heart, and I was pleased that last Friday they announced Officer Sicknick will lie in honor at the Capitol this week. My prayers continue to be with Officer Sicknick’s loved ones and the family members of all of our brave law enforcement officers. Sincerely, |
