On this day in 1964, Canberrans were preparing to learn new road rules with on-the-spot parking fines and traffic lights to be introduced, The Canberra Times reported on the front page. The Department of the Interior had prepared a two-week campaign to get motorists accustomed to laws which would come into effect from September 14. The campaign concentrated on describing the diamond turn at intersections.
