British Science Week: HSE 'Turbo Talks' seminar

Wednesday 12 March, 12.00pm

Join us for a free seminar to celebrate British Science Week (BSW), which runs from 7 to 16 March.

Our series of 5 minute 'Turbo Talks' feature HSE scientists talking about the ways science and evidence is being used to help everyone lead safer and healthier lives.

Topics include:

  • maintaining Great Britain’s record as one of the safest countries to work in: training NHS staff in the effective use of PPE for infectious diseases such as Ebola
  • enabling industry to innovate safely in the move to net zero with MultHyFuel: inclusion of hydrogen onto multi-fuel stations
  • the science and evidence supporting the Building Safety Regulator: understanding building safety hazards unique to ‘mixed-use’ higher-risk buildings
  • reducing work-related ill health: the science and analysis providing evidence in relation to asbestos exposure

Register for the BSW 'Turbo Talks' seminar

Thorough Examination and Testing (TExT) duties

Ensure you understand your duties when conducting TExT of microbiological safety cabinets (MBSCs) and other laboratory-based local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems.

There is increasing evidence to suggest that some sectors using MBSCs and other laboratory-based LEV systems do not fully understand their TExT duties under Regulation 9(2) of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) (as amended).

While testing to the relevant standard (for example, BS EN 12469: 2000) is encouraged, this does not fulfil all the requirements of Regulation 9(2) of COSHH, which has additional information and testing requirements.

You can find information about what a suitable record should contain in paragraph 186 of the associated COSHH Approved Code of Practice.

HSE's publication Controlling airborne contaminants at work: a guide to LEV contains further advice on how to conduct TExT of LEV systems.

HSE advises you to review your organisation's procedures, competencies and processes related to the TExT of LEV systems in laboratory settings and keep suitable records to avoid any enforcement actions.

HSE Research Reports

A selection of the latest research reports from HSE

RR1211: Wood dust exposures in manufacturing industries

In this report, HSE surveyed wood dust exposures in woodworking manufacturing to update existing knowledge.

RR1214: Review of key machinery safety standards and guidance, and how they reflect on emerging technologies

Considering the emergence of new and emerging technologies, and the potential utilization of artificial intelligence for machinery safety, HSE commissioned a study to identify gaps in existing standards and guidance documents.

RR1216: Review of progress of the Iron Mains Risk Reduction Programme (IMRRP) 2013 to 2023

The IMRRP addresses 'societal concern' regarding the potential for failure of cast iron gas mains with the risk of injuries, fatalities and property damage.

This report presents several options for revising HSE’s Iron Mains Enforcement Policy, to ensure that it remains fit for purpose.

RR1217: The use of control measures during licensed asbestos removal

This research aimed to assess compliance of work practices and exposure control measures with HSE guidance during licensed asbestos removal in Great Britain.

The findings, detailed in the report, will help inform HSE site interventions.
