HSEs Science and Research Centre welcomes scientists of the future

Group of students visiting HSE Buxton

A-Level students from a school in Sheffield were able to see first hand the excellent work that goes on at HSE's Science and Research Centre in Buxton.

The visit, organised by HSE, encouraged students to think about science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) as a future career.

Professor Andrew Curran, HSEs Director of Science, said: We are very proud of all our facilities and our specialist scientists, engineers and analysts at Buxton and this visit allowed students to speak to our inspirational scientists who were able to showcase some of their work first-hand.

"Visits like this are really important as they can trigger a wow moment for a student which inspires them to take a new direction in their career.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

HSE Scientist Susy Brescia

The immense contribution made by women experts in science and technology to the work of HSE was recognised at last month's International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

HSE employs women in a range of scientific disciplines, and is highlighting how its women scientists make a vital contribution to keeping people safe at work:

Zoe Gould, Work Psychologist

Zoe joined HSE in 2017 as an apprentice, and now has a degree in Criminology and Psychological Studies. She is working towards an MSc in Psychology and works on a variety of projects including workplace safety culture and behaviour change

Susy Brescia, Head of Toxicology

Susy has a PhD in Occupational Toxicology and Epidemiology and is an expert on the effects of chemicals on hormone systems.

Samantha Hall, HSE Exposure Assessment and Control Team

Samantha is a physicist and was recently awarded Chartered Physicist status by the Institute of Physics. She has recently worked on HSEs response to COVID-19 exposures relating to the suitability of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Find out more about the work of HSE's women scientists and how their work is having a positive impact on protecting people and places in ourAnnual Science Review 2022.
