HSE is proud to publish the 2024Annual Science Review, which this year focuses on the role played by our scientists and engineers in delivering forensic incident investigation activities and providing expert evidence used by courts to secure justice. Download the 2024 Annual Science Review at HSEs science and research website, where you can learn more about the difference HSE makes through our commitment to science. The review provides case studies from the range of science and engineering work we have delivered. It illustrates how HSE uses science and evidence to protect people and places, helping everyone lead safer and healthier lives. Professor Andrew Curran, HSEs Director of Science and Chief Scientific Adviser said: "Tragically, 135 workers were killed in work-related incidents in Great Britain last year. While some of these had an obvious cause, others required specialist input from scientists, engineers and analysts to understand the causation. "Im really pleased that our review has a focus on the role played by these teams in delivering forensic incident investigation activities and providing expert evidence used by courts to secure justice." Case studies include: Maintaining Great Britains record as one of the safest countries to work in - HSEs Forensic investigation; the robust scientific evidence that underpins HSE's regulatory activities Enabling industry to innovate safely to prevent major incidents: supporting the move towards net zero - MultHyFuel: inclusion of hydrogen onto multi-fuel stations - population density analysis for CO2 pipeline routing Reducing work-related ill health - evaluation of exposure controls used in electrolytic nickel plating Increase and maintain trust to ensure people feel safe where they live, where they work and in their environment - monitoring the health of registered pesticide workers: 10 years of the PIPAH study - putting residents at the heart of the new Building Safety Regulator 'Turbo Talks' seminar 18 April, 1.00 - 2.00pm Join our launch seminar to hear from HSEs scientists and engineers as they present 5 minute Turbo Talks on their work featured in this years review.
