In the last year, 135 workers were killed in work-related incidents in Great Britain. HSE's annual data release covers the period from April 2022 to March 2023. The total of 135 worker deaths in 2022/23 is higher than the previous year (123) but is in line with pre-pandemic levels. The most common causes of fatal injuries are falls from height (40),being struck by a moving object (29), and being struck by a moving vehicle (20). HSE has also published the annual figures for Mesothelioma (.pdf), a cancer caused by past exposure to asbestos, 2,268 people died from the disease in 2021. HSE proudly supported International Women in Engineering Day on 23 June. Jill Wilday and Ju Lynne Saw are working on HSEs strategic objective to support the UKs move towards a safe net zero. Jill is one of HSEs Technical Fellows. She technically reviews our engineering work enabling the safe deployment of net zero energy technologies, including the case studies published in the 2023 HSE Annual Science Review: Net Zero (p5), HyTunnel (p11) and FlyZero (p13). Ju Lynne Saw is a Principal Engineer with a PhD in chemical engineering and is currently working on projects related to the safety aspects of net zero, such as HyTunnel, MultHyFuel and Hydrogen for Heating. Jill said: I'm now partially retired and enjoying technically reviewing scientific evidence about the safety of hydrogen replacing natural gas for heating, work HSE is doing for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
