Seth Davis breaks down the factors powering an offensive explosion

Friday night was all right for hooping. While most of the world was transfixed on the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul “fight,” yours truly was digging deep into Alabama-Purdue, Wisconsin-Arizona and Marquette-Maryland. (Okay, so I watched the fight on a second screen — or was it a third?) Those games did not disappoint and though the rest of the weekend was kind of light on matchups, we know that early November is a mere undercard to the more compelling battles to come.

Whether you’re an avid watcher like me or a channel surfer who occasionally checks in, you have probably noticed that college hoops seems more entertaining than it has been in a long time. The numbers back that up, as I report in Hoop Thoughts this week. College basketball has been on fire in the opening fortnight, with scoring numbers and percentages not seen in a long time — or ever. Basketball all over the world has become ever more wide open and fast-paced over the last decade. College basketball was behind the curve a while back, but it sure has caught up in a hurry.

College basketball is blessed with both a heavy dose of fifth-year seniors who are still making buckets (and earning money!) for their schools. It also has one of the best freshmen classes we’ve seen in some time. The action will continue to build in advance of the Thanksgiving Week feast to come. Hoops HQ will be your guide in our efforts to earn Rookie of the Year honors. Let’s get to the action and spice up your Monday morning...

HOOP THOUGHTS: THE REASONS BEHIND THE OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL

By Seth Davis

For those of us who have long been arguing for ways to make college basketball more entertaining, the start to the 2024-25 season arrived like Christmas in November. Check out these numbers:

  • During the first two weeks of the season, teams averaged 73.8 points per game. If it holds up, it would be the highest since 1995.
  • Teams are averaging 1.045 points per possession. That's by far the highest 14-day efficiency rating since KenPom.com began tracking the stat. We're on track to exceed the 1.052 points per possession teams averaged last season, which was the highest ever recorded.
  • Percentages on two-point field goals (51.0 percent) and free throws (70.6) have never been higher, although three-point percentage (32.9) has remained somewhat flat.

What in the name of Paul Westhead is turbo charging college basketball in such a delectable manner? Here are three factors...

GAME OF THE DAY: No. 4 Gonzaga @ San Diego State: This is the first true road game for the Bulldogs, and it won't be a cakewalk. The Aztecs are 2-0 and have looked impressive defensively once again, but how will they hold up against the top-ranked offense in the nation (per KenPom)? Stay up for this West coast battle. 10:00 p.m. ET on CBSSN.
