Good morning, The schools are back at last. There was relief for millions of Scottish parents yesterday as pupils returned to the classroom. But many people have been left confused by what will happen if someone in their child’s class tests positive for Covid, under new self-isolation rules brought in this term. Under new regulations, anyone who is under 18 – or is a fully vaccinated adult whose second dose was given longer than two weeks ago – does not have to isolate when deemed a close contact, if they take a PCR Covid test – the kind offered at government testing centres. Here, we answer the questions that parents are asking as children go back to the classroom. We've also analysed the latest Covid case figures to find the 12 virus hotspots in Scotland right now. GERS warning A leading financial think-tank has warned that tax rises or public service cuts would be needed to tackle Scotland’s mounting deficit should the country gain independence. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said while the deficit will reduce as the UK economy recovers, and temporary additional spending on support for public services winds down, Scotland’s financial black hole would need to be tackled. New government figures showed Scotland's deficit has doubled in the past year to £36 billion as a result of Covid pandemic spending, falling tax take, and a slump in oil and gas revenues. | |
