Good morning,

Welcome to your Friday news update from The Scotsman.

Nicola Sturgeon is set to make an update on coronavirus restrictions in Scotland today.

Specifically, she is expected to reveal what will happen in Glasgow and Moray, which were left in level three restrictions while most of mainland Scotland moved into level two on Monday.

In Glasgow, there are concerns about the presence of the highly transmissible Indian variant.

Also expected to be raised is the situation in Midlothian and East Renfrewshire, which also had high Covid-19 case rates in recent weeks.

More big news today: Scotland is getting its very own Eden project

Scots will no longer have to travel all the way down to Cornwall to see the world-famous environmental project. A former gasworks in Dundee is going to be transformed into a "stunning" eco-attraction under new plans just announced

Its set to transform the city's waterfront, as well as bring in millions to the local economy and provide hundreds of jobs.

Finally, a more sobering story.

The scale of deaths in care homes across Scotland was unlawfully kept secret by an arm of the Scottish Government, it can be revealed.

The National Records of Scotland breached freedom of information legislation by refusing to release the number of confirmed and suspected Covid-19 related deaths in each of Scotland’s care homes.

It comes in a week when a report found the Scottish Government had unlawfully moved patients from hospitals into care homes during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Thank you for reading, more stories below and on our website.
