Nafi's Father (Senegal) - Jan. 31st, 3pm UK time Mainland Africaβs most westerly country only submitted to the Oscars for the first time in 2018 with Alain Gomisβ FΓ©licitΓ©, but is on something of a roll with both that and its second entry - Mati Diopβs Atlantics last year - making the January shortlist. Attempting to go one better is this drama about extremism, centred on the fight between an Imam and his powerful brother over their childrenβs marriage. The film debuted at Locarno in 2019, going on to play festivals including GΓΆteborg and Rotterdam. It is the debut directorial film of cinematographer and NYU graduate Dia.
