Sean Payton to Loyola grads: Start fast, don't give up

By Chad Calder | Staff writer

Payton's advice: Former Saints coach Sean Payton gave the commencement address at Loyola University on Saturday, telling graduates that only about two-thirds of newly hatched iguanas avoid getting devoured by snakes on the Galapagos Islands. Trust me, it will make sense when you read about it.

Coming to roost: Chick-fil-A, the hugely popular Atlanta-based fast food restaurant, hasn't had a stand-alone presence in Orleans Parish, but that's about to change. Crews have torn down the former Burger King building at Loyola and South Carrollton avenues, the highest profile of a few locations that could begin opening at by the end of the year. Tony McAuley has the latest on what had to be done to ease traffic concerns for the chain, which routinely has lines backing up onto major streets in other locations.

Head of the class: Meet Nadia James, one of four valedictorians in this year's graduating class at Dillard University. She earned a 4.0 GPA and a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice while taking night classes, working a full-time job and being a single mother to her daughter, La’Nyia. Marie Fazio has the inspiring story about how she pulled it off.

Why Johnny can't graduate: A bit out of left field, the Louisiana House approved a bill that would prevent third graders with reading problems from moving on to the fourth grade. If it becomes law, it could affect about 4,500 students. You can read more about where the idea came from and what it seeks to accomplish, here.
