Search for missing kids in river continues

By Bob Warren

River search: Searchers continued combing the Mississippi River, set to the grim task of finding three young people reported missing in the river near Algiers over the weekend. “My heart breaks for us to get these babies out of the river,” one searcher told our Missy Wilkinson.

Merci: As World War II raged, Cajuns from south Louisiana were pressed into duty providing a particularly valuable service to the Allies – translating messages, documents and conversations. They became known as "Frenchies" and the National World War II Museum in New Orleans will celebrate their contributions this week, John Pope writes.

Attention shoppers: Is the beleaguered Esplanade mall in Kenner about the lose another tenant? The city of Kenner moved its offices there post Hurricane Ida, after its Williams Boulevard compound was heavily damaged. But the new mayor, who takes office in a couple of months, appears to be looking for a new spot for City Hall to call home.

Tunnel vision: No, the world’s richest person didn’t propose a tunnel to help folks evacuate from New Orleans during hurricanes. Well, not specifically. But social media was a-twitter (sorry!) Monday at the possibility of Elon Musk endorsing the notion.

Get your Fest on: It's so nice to have the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival back after a pandemic-driven hiatus. But food ace Ian McNulty writes that the dining lineup we’ll see over the next two weekends has undergone some slight, but noticeable changes. Here's why.

Speaking of Jazz Fest, the latest edition of Gambit is out, and it’s full of previews, maps, and daily cubes. We’ve also spun off a Jazz Fest-themed newsletter. Hope you’ll check it out – we think you’ll be glad you did.

Hope you enjoyed today’s Lunch Line. Thanks for taking a break with us. And of course, be sure to check out NOLA.com for more news throughout the day.
