EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

When an opportunity for a “night skies and ghost towns” road trip across Nevada and Utah came across our collective desks, it’s probably fair to say that the whole team wanted in. But I had a trump card in the form of my partner, Ben Nguyen, who could shoot astrophotography.

So off the two of us drove — camping supplies and camera gear loaded in the trunk — into the night. From Area 51 to possible hauntings to a close brush with a wildfire, you can read more about our somewhat deranged adventures in the story above. But aside from the star-spangled skies, the ancient twisted bristlecones, the otherworldly desert landscapes, this trip was special for another reason, which I chose in the end not to mention in the actual story. So here’s an exclusive for you devoted newsletter readers out there: As the Milky Way rose above the reddish rocky landscape of Utah, I got down on one knee and asked Ben to marry me. And I’m happy to say, dear reader, he said yes.
