The state of the highways in the region was the big news on this day in 1974. The lead article reported a decision by the federal government to take control of the Federal and Barton Highways from the NSW state government as well as the Hume Highway from Sydney to Melbourne. These 'national highways' would be better funded and, in the case of the Hume, realigned to bring it closer to Canberra and a more direct route.
