See top 10, bottom 10 Michigan counties for absentee voting, just days from Election Day |
More than 30% of Michigan’s 8.4 million registered voters have already cast their ballot for the 2024 presidential election with just five days to go until Election Day, according to the Michigan Secretary of State Office. Here are the top and bottom 10 Michigan counties, by what percentage of registered voters have submitted an absentee ballot, as of Tuesday. The state’s data does not include the 505,683 early votes that have been submitted so far in Michigan. Former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee for president, will continue his campaigning in Michigan with plans to host a rally at Macomb Community College in Warren on Friday, Nov. 1. Trump's running mate Sen. JD Vance will also speak at a rally in Portage on Friday. A University of Michigan student who is not a U.S. citizen is facing criminal charges for allegedly illegally registering to vote and casting a ballot at an early voting site in Ann Arbor. |

Can Michigan save monarch butterflies by ‘seed bombing’ milkweed? |
Plight of the butterfly: Milkweed is the only type of native wildflower that monarch butterflies rely on. Some environmental advocates want Michigan to more fully embrace the plant now that it’s no longer legally considered a “noxious weed.” Some suggest monarch butterfly proponents could start “seed bombing” Michigan with milkweed, if they haven’t already. Without enough milkweed, the monarch butterfly is bound for extinction. Zombie trees: The U.S. Forest Service is asking the public to help point out live-looking-but-actually dead trees since they can pose a safety hazard in urban environments. In infrastructure: Five railroad improvement projects have secured up to $119.7 million in federal grant funding for Michigan, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Tuesday, Oct. 29. |

Human remains found near Hoover Dam in 2009 identified as Michigan man |
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona said that forensic analysis completed this week revealed that the remains belong to William Herman Hietamaki of Trout Creek in Ontonagon County. Family told investigators that Hietamaki was last seen when he went to visit his sister in New Mexico in 1995, and that he was known to hitchhike to various locations as part of his nomadic lifestyle. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced charges on Wednesday against three 18-year-old men accused of killing Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Bradley Reckling and conducting a criminal enterprise. Reckling was shot and killed in Detroit on June 22 while pursuing a stolen SUV that the suspects were allegedly in at the time. Also in crime: Police are searching for three suspects after a homeowner recently found a suspicious man in their basement, police said. The suspect claimed to be a FlexSeal salesman before allegedly assaulting the victim, stealing items and fleeing, according to a news release from the Taylor Police Department. |

Severe thunderstorm outlook has part of Michigan targeted on Halloween |
Forecast: A strong cold front will create a line of thunderstorms on Halloween. The storms will be the result of record warmth being shoved out by much cooler air. We can expect a solid rainy period across northern Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. In the severe weather potential area of southern Michigan, however, there will only be off and on showers and a half hour of thunderstorms. Getting ready: As meteorologists track just how wintery this winter could be, emergency operations across Washtenaw County are preparing for whatever Mother Nature throws our way. It’s unlikely winter in southeast Michigan will be as mild as last winter, which brought below-average snowfall and higher temperatures. Take a look: Fall color in West Michigan began to peak this week, with some eye-popping color in some areas, some spots the color was dull and the trees were already bare. We sent many MLive photojournalists throughout the state to capture the best of fall's color. |
