Where NOLA Eats

Hello and welcome to the hurricane edition of the Where NOLA Eats newsletter. We hope you're safe and dry and ready to daydream about New Orleans food once Francine blows over.

This week, Ian McNulty rounds up ideas for restaurants to try in September.  G.W. Fins has finished a major remodeling effort, and we take a first look. Find out which New Orleans chef made Food + Wine's Best New Chefs list. Can you do girls' night at Nobu on a budget? We found out. Nominate your favorite New Orleans spot for fried chicken.  Finally, we bring back some stormy weather classics with Judy Walker's comforting recipes for sheet pan chicken, sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts, plus a sweet treat.

1. A September to remember?

It’s been a long, slow summer in New Orleans, but there’s still a lot happening in the local restaurant scene. Ian McNulty has quick picks for new places and memorable favorites to try this month.

2. Fresh new look.

The high-end French Quarter seafood destination G.W. Fins completed its first thorough remodeling in 24 years, reopening at the end of August to reveal a more contemporary and stylish dining room. Ian says the change feels more than skin deep.

3. Wait! There's more.

Pêche Seafood Grill chef de cuisine Nicole Cabrera Mills was named to Food + Wine's Best New Chefs list, representing what the publication considers “the future of cooking in America.” Three of our staffers tried to do girls' night on a budget at the New Orleans location of the notoriously upscale Japanese restaurant, Nobu; find out how that went.  And make sure you nominate your favorite for our entirely unscientific readers' poll for the city's best fried chicken.

4. Comfort food classics.

Judy Walker came up with this sheet-pan recipe for chicken, sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts after a hurricane. You'll appreciate the simple goodness of this comforting dinner, along with a sweet dessert.

In New Orleans, the food news never stops. Keep up with all the inside info at Where NOLA Eats.

Your waiter at G.W. Fins will most likely point out that the menu is printed daily, changing with the fish coming through the kitchen. What had not changed much in more than two decades, though, was the design and feel around the high-end French Quarter seafood restaurant. Read more
