On June 5^th, The United States-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce (USACC) hosted an online session on “Azerbaijan’s Role in Transcontinental Transportation of Goods in Central Eurasia: From the Junction Point of Sea and Land to Global Value Chain” featuring Director General of the Baku International Sea Trade Port Dr.Taleh Ziyadov. Here are some highlights from the session:

COVID-19 has brought new reality to global logistics and transportation. Importance of multi-modal transportation, especially utilization of the container transshipment has increased. Some of cargo brought with trucks from Turkey, Ukraine, Georgia and other parts of Europe were moved to containers at the Port of Baku and transshipped further to the Central Asia and China.
Port of Baku and OSCE have jointly initiated “Promoting Green Ports and Connectivity in the Caspian Sea Region” project which aims creating a web platform to support Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan in strengthening green port and connectivity in the Caspian Sea Region. The project will increase efficiency in communication between the ports with less paperwork and harmonization of documentations between the partner ports of the Caspian Sea. The project will be implemented in partnership with EBRD, UNECE and leading private sector experts.
Port of Baku has recently launched “bonded area” in 99 acres (40 hectare) of land, for local and international businesses. The area hosts 10 000 sq.m closed warehouses with 24/7 services, including storage, cargo handling, door to door delivery and online tracking of cargo, etc.
Due to global outbreak of COVID-19 infection, the Port is currently operating under special regime. Two specialized zones – “temporary waiting and quarantine zone” and “sterile (clean) zone”, have been created for truck drivers within the Port area. No restrictions on the movement of cargo and vehicles are applied.

The Baku International Sea Trade Port is located over an area of 400 hectares (988 acres), about 70 kilometres south of downtown Baku, near Alat township. Its first phase was inaugurated on May 14, 2018 with an annual throughput capacity of 15 million tons of cargo, including 100,000 TEU. The second phase of the port envisages an increase in the throughput capacity to 25 million tons of cargo, including 1,000,000 TEU.
