Click here Seville European Film Festival is the perfect gateway into Spain for filmmakers, international partners The 18th edition of Seville European Film Festival (SEFF, November 5-13) this year boasts a bigger than ever competition section, a dedicated showcase of Spanish films for local exhibitors and a special focus on co-producing with Germany. The 21-strong competition line-up includes two world premieres by dynamic homegrown filmmakers: the drama Las Gentiles by the Seville-born, award- winning filmmaker Santi Amodeo, and ¿Qué hicimos mal?, a drama written, directed and starring Catalan filmmaker Liliana Torres. Rising Spanish director David Pantaleón on his ode to anti-masculinity ‘Our Father’ David Pantaleón’s Our Father (Rendir Los Machos) opened the New Waves section at this week’s Seville European Film Festival (November 5-13). Canary Islands-born Pantaleón began his career as an actor before he began to directing short films including The Painted Calf and The Passion of Judas, which screened at multiple film festivals. His debut feature is a co-production between Spain’s Volcano Films, who had seen Pantaleon’s shorts and approached him to make a feature, and France’s Noodles Production. It grapples with issues of patriarchy and male identity and tells the story of two brothers who have to cross the island of Fuerteventura on foot to offer a bunch of male goats their dead father has donated in his will to a man they hardly know. Their sister is excluded from the ritual and oversees it at a distance. Liliana Torres talks drawing on her own real-life heartbreak for docu-drama ‘What Went Wrong?’ The thrill and heartbreak of falling in and out of love have been a constant source of inspiration for filmmakers. Spanish director Liliana Torres is no exception although her second feature What Went Wrong? (¿Qué hicimos mal?) takes the less travelled road of turning the camera onto her own love history, documenting the stories that went wrong in a film constantly plays with fiction and documentary. What Went Wrong? is screening as a world premiere in competition at the Seville European Film Festival (November 5-13) this week, Torres studied film directing at the Catalan film school ESCAC and specialised in documentary during the years she lived in Mexico. She also has experience as a producer and editor. As a director, she has made well-received shorts Anteayer (2005) and Quince años (2012), and the documentary Hayati (2018), co-directed with Sofía Escudé.
