500 times more microplastics in our Ocean than stars in our galaxy
To increase the pressure on the European Commission and Member States and ensure they're taking microplastic pollution seriously and are considering adopting the right measures, Surfrider Europe has teamed up for the second time, with the talented agency Ici Barbes to produce an impactful video sending us from what we might is space to the Ocean in no time and make this invisible microplastic pollution visible to the public and possibly decision maker. The NGO is calling the EU to ban as soon as possible and with equal ambition all microplastics added to our consumer products. Plastic Origins: Artificial intelligence to stop pollution at its source
Surfrider Europe was created by people who are passionate about surfing and committed to protecting it. Three decades later, this desire to protect and enjoy remains at the core of the organization. Our actions are motivated by a drive to preserve our natural playground. Today, however, our expert network stretches beyond the beach. We now know that the majority of the plastic pollution in the Ocean comes from rivers that pass throught major cities. So to solve this problem, we have to think upstream and take action at the source. Hence, the launch of Plastic Origins. |

Plastic pellets: new report out exposes alarming impacts
Industrial plastic pellets, also known as pellets or mermaid tears, are small spheres used as raw material in the manufacturing of almost all plastic items. Due to their small size (usually less than 5mm) and bad practices, pellets are often "lost" at all stages of the plastic production and distribution chain (production, transport, recycling...). A new report published by Surfrider Europe denounces the alarming pollution caused by plastic pellets and calls for European measures. |

Challenging week at La Torche
From the 17th to the 25th of October, the Finistère Chapter (France) has participated to the Wave Games in La Torche. In parallel with the contests of kite, paddle, surf and windsurf; volunteers have organized several actions. They have realized two Ocean Initiatives which helped to increase the awareness of roughly forty people. A real success that led to collect around 50kg of waste, composed essentially with rope, fishing nets and plastic packaging.
On the stand, they proposed several animations and games. One of the most interesting one was the animation allowing people to write a message to the Ocean on a surfboard. Even Antoine Albeau, 25 times windsurf world champion, did it. |

Artistic upcycling in Peniche
Vissla, a committed brand, has partnered up with Surfrider Europe in order to organize a surfboard creation contest. It allowed artists - "the wave conscious" - to take something that might be considered waste and to use it to create something that can be used in the Ocean. Peniche's volunteers took part in the contest with the creation of a surfboard made with a fridge that was discarded close to sea. They also used cigarette butts, face masks and several microplastics, all collected around the beaches in Peniche. Thanks to this, Andres Noe and Stepan Reznicek won second place. Such a nice artistic example of upcycling! |
