Good evening, Shane Warne was one of the most gifted sportsmen not just of his own generation, but of any era. It is difficult to think of the cricketer who died today aged just 52 without remembering that impossible ball which bowled England batsman Mike Gatting during The Ashes series of 1993. It is referred to, without a hint of irony, as The Ball of The Century. And while even I am not old enough to have witnessed every cricket ball bowled in the 20th century, it would have to have been a good 'un to beat it. We all associate amazing sporting moments with specific times in our lives. For some it is England winning the World Cup or Chris Waddle missing a penalty at Italia 90, Andy Murray's first Wimbledon triumph or the cricket World Cup which England won in a super over. The Gatting Ball was one of those moments and will ensure Shane Warne a sporting legacy which will be remembered forever. RIP Warney. Until next time, take care, Gillian |
