Dusty Lawless wanted out. 

The Ascension Parish mother was being abused by her onetime boyfriend. She told friends and family she was trying to get away from him.

But he killed her.

After five and a half years, her family finally has some closure — the boyfriend was convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison. 

Dusty's story shows how difficult it can be for victims of domestic violence to escape, even when their life is at risk. 

More searing testimony in Greene case

For almost eight hours, a panel of Louisiana legislators grilled State Police officials over the case of Ronald Greene, who died when troopers beat him after a car chase.

The lawmakers accused several officials of dodging questions and questioned about why some top leaders had their phones "wiped" after the incident. 

And one State Police use of force expert called the trooper's treatment of Greene "torture and murder."
